The University of Maryland ID Card

Every student on campus is issued a University of Maryland ID card. This card is extremely valuable and carrying the card brings privileges and responsibilities.

Privileges include:

• Access to your Dining Plan accounts and Terrapin Express account.
• Appropriate access to residence halls, classroom buildings, recreational facilities, and campus sponsored events.
• Treatment at the Health Center.
• Ability to use campus computers and to borrow books and make copies at the campus libraries.
• Free access to the University’s shuttle buses.

Responsibilities include:

• Retain possession of your ID card and do not allow anyone else to use your card. A card being used by a person not pictured on the front will be confiscated and returned only to the person pictured on the card.
• If lost or stolen, cancel your card and obtain a replacement card. Dining Plan and Terrapin Express points may not be accessed without a valid, active University of Maryland ID card which must be presented by the person pictured on the front of the card. Cashiers are not permitted to complete any sale without a valid ID presented by its rightful owner.
• You are responsible for the full value of purchases made with your card. If for any reason, the system allows purchases in an amount greater than the available balance on the card, you will be charged the difference through the Bursar’s Office.

Misuse of card will result in loss of card privileges. Misuse includes and is not limited to:

• Using another customer’s ID card, credit card or debit card to pay for items
• Re-encoding the UM ID card to access another person’s account
• Refusing to surrender UM ID card upon demand to UM official as required by the terms and conditions of the card

Theft from any Dining Services venue will result in disciplinary action up to and including prosecution in a court of law. Theft is defined to include and is not limited to:

• Carrying of any food or other items past the cashier without paying the correct retail price
• Concealing food or other items within other food items (e.g. under salad from salad bar)
• Concealing food or other items in pockets, backpack, etc.
• Misrepresenting contents of carryout container
• Eating or drinking in the serving area. This becomes theft at the moment the customer leaves the serving area without declaring to the cashier and paying full retail value for all food removed from the serving line or beverage machine

In addition to the actions referenced above, any student who fails in these responsibilities (especially repeated failure) is subject to being referred to the Office of Student Conduct .
